Carmen's commitment to IDP 2013:
I will head the committee of the Peace ONE DAY, Global Truce 2013 http://peaceoneday.org/, Shinnyo-en cards guided reflection http://www.sef.org/resources/ Pinwheels-4- Peace http://www.pinwheelsforpeace.com/pinwheelsforpeace/pinwheel_template.html

I will make pinwheels with interested parties at my school (possible ones included in this e-mail) and will be a resource- with an online lesson plan- to the” Greater OKC Community.”  I will not be able to pick-up or store pinwheels. (No storage space, no funding for gas and no time) This year, I am  supervising the Casady Student Center and might be helping the after school program. Little flexibility to leave campus.  I will ask Rev. Long if there is a place to store pinwheels as early as the week before the installation of the giant Pinwheels for Peace Walking Labyrinth.

The value of the pinwheel is in our reflection on inner peace, our role in the creation of a kinder community around us, and our connection to global peace through the art and creativity expressed in the pinwheel. Walking, at leisure, through the pinwheel labyrinth looking at our collective, intergenerational  thoughts will be a great experience. May I suggest that every participating organization and individual should pledge, not only the $25 sponsorship fee, but a comfortable number of pinwheels made by members of their organizations as a way of raising awareness in their own communities.

Why is this day important? Check out the Peace One Day Global Truce 2012 results: http://peaceoneday.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Peace-Day-2012-Results-from-Peace-One-Day.pdf;    http://peaceoneday.org/2012-campaign/;

E-mail from Jeremy Gilley on Peace Poem Competition and educational resources

Dear Teacher,

With exactly three months to go until Peace Day 2013 we are so excited to share our newest update! Our Primary Education Resource – kindly underwritten by Ocado – now has several new lesson plans.

The lesson plans, the activities within them, and the supporting resources have been designed to engage all primary ages to provide every child with the opportunity to become active in the build up to Peace Day, 21 September.

New additions include a tried and tested, hands-on activity for pupils around our 2013 theme ‘Who Will You Make Peace With?’ and a beautiful ‘Poem for Peace’ lesson plan, for which Ocado have just launched an amazing competition especially for UK primary schools.

The Poem for Peace lesson will be featured as ‘Resource of the week’ in next week’s edition of the TES, the UK’s most subscribed teaching magazine, due to its depth of engagement. Children will be inspired writers from the word go, with an introduction video from leading children’s author, Francesca Simon, known best for her Horrid Henry books – now a popular TV series. From there the lesson plan provides all support resources and ideas to fire your pupils’ imagination and the Ocado competition will motivate them to produce their very best.

The winner and three family members will be at the Peace Palace to see an incredible line-up of international artists, including Carlinhos Brown (Brazil), Miguel Bosé (Spain), The Feeling (UK), Jahméne Douglas (UK) and Kane (Netherlands) and other special guests, along with flights and two nights’ accommodation. The winning poem will also be printed on tea towels and sold through Ocado – with all profits going to Peace One Day. And four lucky runners-up will each win £200 of Ocado vouchers!

The Poem for Peace lesson is perfect in supporting your post-SATs planning, as well as encouraging children to support Peace Day while showing off their best literacy skills before the summer break.

Access our newly updated Primary Education Resource now and inspire your peace-making poets! We look forward to reading their best Poems for Peace and hearing your school’s plans to mark Peace Day this year!

Thank you for your continued support.

In peace,

International Day of Peace 2012, OCU Giant Pinwheel Garden
http://www.sef.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/PeaceDay91.jpg
MEETING OF International Day of Peace Committee: June 17, 2013

Committee members in attendance:  Dee Freeland, Steve McLinn, Bill Bryant, Elizabeth Muller, Carmen Clay and Joan Korenblit

I.        The committee members in attendance wish to emphasize PEACE and UNITY more so than in past years.  A request will be made that each performing group e-mail a short statement of what their performance means to them. We’d like to request that a member or the director of each group share the comments with the audience.  This will make the program more organic.

II.     Requests for suggestions of Masters of Ceremonies led to the suggestion that we select one or two people who will simply keep program flowing.  But the groups will actually introduce themselves.  UPDATE: Carmen is working on getting a former Miss OSU, Aly Akers,  who has an anti-bullying nonprofit: PAST http://www.preventandstoptormenting.org/.  If she agrees, she will model the introductions as she twirls for peace.  Aly Akers is a former state, regional, national, and world champion baton twirler. She was the feature twirler at OSU in 2012, where she is a Business/Pre-Law major and is also Miss OSU. Aly competed in the 2012 Miss Oklahoma Pageant in June. Her platform for Miss Oklahoma is P.A.S.T. – Prevent and Stop Tormenting, which is an anti-bullying campaign. She speaks to schools throughout the state on behalf of P.A.S.T. Aly spoke to the Upper Chapel and spent a few minutes with a few members of the Casady YAC during B-block.  YAC is thankful to have had Aly share her story of service with us:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/PAST-Prevent-And-Stop-Tormenting/162854593764584  Update from Aly via Facebook:  Thank you Carmen for inviting me to this wonderful event. I will be available and would love to be the MC for The International Day of Peace Multicultural Festival. Thank you again for asking me and I look forward to seeing you soon!

III.           We will be inviting more drummers to join our drumming circle.  Suggestion was that drumming circle begin at 4:00 and program begin at 5:00.

IV.        Drumming circle will begin outside and the procession will gradually move inside.  Elizabeth will lead dances of universal peace, perhaps as a flow from the drumming circle.

V.           Mikel will create SAVE THE DATE flyer to be sent to all our lists.

VI.        Carmen is planning to have Pinwheel making classes inspired by a lesson/video on peace.  UPDATE: Classes will be at Casady School Wing and Carmen will take requests to provide classes where requested in August and before 9/11 when she will start 11 Days of Unity at Casady School.  Pinwheels for OCU's labyrinth should be delivered and planted directly at the OCU campus.  We need to contact Reverend Long for a possible storage location. Carmen also contacted OCU Film screenings professor, Harbour Winn, ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pza4Xctn3E0hwinn@okcu.edu. )

VII.             Elizabeth will be planning the Peace Labyrinth for placement of pinwheels. Update: Carmen contacted Hallie Sawyers, LMT, APP, NCBTMB TLS Education Outreach Chair of the Labyrinth Society:  hsawyers@comcast.net and received the following reply What a wonderful labyrinth project you are undertaking! The Labyrinth Society has a Special Projects Program available for members through which funding can be requested for labyrinth-centered projects. Here’s the link to the Special Projects page of our website. And here’s the link to the membership page of our website. If Elizabeth is a member of this society, we could apply for a grant for the labyrinth??

VIII.         We all agree that we need more members for the International Day of Peace committee with an emphasis on university students. Update: Carmen sent a mass e-mail to Casady IDP friends and partner organizations providing Jeremy Gilley's Peace Poem contest information and other resources and calling for interested parties to join the planning team for IDP at Casady and OCU.  Carmen contacted OCU professors Dann May and Rev. Jennifer Long.  No response as of 6/24/2013.

IX.        A big question is – “How can we get more audience members to attend?”  Updated another big question sent via e-mail by Joan was who will be the leader of OCU IDP 2013?

A huge question is – “Do we have the commitment to continue this celebration in spite of the fact that our committee is getting smaller and our audience is mostly performers and their families?” Steve gave the answer, yes!

June 13, 2013 began the 100 days count down to the International Day of Peace (IDP), observed annually on 21 September.   IDP is dedicated to peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access.

1981-1982
In 1981, The United Nations General Assembly declared, in a resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom and Costa Rica,[2] the International Day of Peace, to be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace.[3] The date initially chosen was the regular opening day of the annual sessions of the General Assembly, the third Tuesday of September. This was changed in 2001 to the current annual celebration on 21 September each year. The day was first celebrated in 1982.

To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City). The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world peace".[1]
Individuals can also wear White Peace Doves to commemorate the International Day of Peace, which are badges in the shape of a dove produced by a non-profit organization in Canada

2001
In 2001 the opening day of the General Assembly was scheduled for 11 September, and Secretary General Kofi Annan drafted a message recognizing the observance of International Peace Day on 11 September.[5] That year the day was changed from the third Tuesday to specifically the twenty-first day of September, to take effect in 2002. A new resolution was passed by the General Assembly,[2] sponsored by the United Kingdom (giving credit to Peace One Day) and Costa Rica (the original sponsors of the day), to give the International Day of Peace a fixed calendar date, 21 September, and declare it also as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence

2011

Casady Middle Division, Peace Day 2011
In 2011, Peace One Day announced at their O2 Arena concert, a new international campaign called Global Truce 2012, a grassroots initiative and international coalition with non-governmental organizations and student unions in every continent, which increased participation and action on Peace Day 2012, the day of Global Truce. Particular focus in this campaign including a cessation of hostilities on the day, is the reduction of domestic violence and bullying in society. The Peace One Day Celebration concert on Peace Day in 2012 was held at Wembley Arena to celebrate Global Truce 2012.[15] The Global Truce campaign continues aiming to involve more partners and coalitions for mass participation and life-saving practical action on Peace Day.

2012

Casady Lower Division 2012
Peace One Day Global Truce Campaign called for a reduction of domestic violence.
Through detailed analysis conducted with the support of McKinsey & Company, the Peace One Day 2012 report found that, across the world, 280 million people in 198 countries were aware of Peace Day 2012 – 4% of the world’s population. The report further estimates that approximately 2% of those people (5.6 million) behaved more peacefully as a result. Peace One Day expects to double those figures for 2013, creating a solid foundation for informing 3 billion people about Peace Day by 2016.

The achievements of Peace One Day’s work in 2012 have not only set an important marker for Peace Day 2013 and future Peace Days, but have also reinforced the value of this unique annual day as a foundation for long-term sustainable peace.
Peace Day 2012 Summary Report

Peace Day 2012 @ Oklahoma City

On September 21, 2012, International Day of Peace, students throughout Oklahoma City participated in a variety of activities that culminated at the annual Oklahoma City University Multicultural Festival and a1,000 Pinwheels for Peace Garden sponsored by a diverse group of Oklahoma artists, educators, the Respect Diversity Foundation, and the Friends of the United Nations of Greater Oklahoma.

Students from Dove Academy at Oklahoma City University learned from activities facilitated by festival chairs, Mikel Ibarra, Joan Korenblit, and Japan America Society education coordinator Dr. Gigi Hu. After viewing and reflecting a short trailer on “Peace One Day” and “On a Paper Crane, Tomoko’s Adventure,” students made origami cranes for peace and wrote Haiku poetry. Before planting pinwheels made at their school, they walked through a peace labyrinth, learning about the importance of quiet meditation from Labyrinths in Oklahoma writer Gail Peck.

5pm on 9/21/2012, a dozen co-sponsoring organizations and a large drumming circle welcomed hundreds of participants to the Multicultural Festival. Participants in Shinnyo-en Foundation’s Six Billion Paths to Peace T-shirts enjoyed artists from a variety of ethnic traditions.

The grand finale was a dance of peace with audience participation. Said author Michael Allen, “This festival and the many activities during the eleven days of unity, 9/11-9/21, happened because people of diverse cultures worked together and decided that we CAN make this a more peaceful world.”

From creating pinwheels for peace encouraging a global truce on violence, to participating in service-learning projects, thousands of Oklahoma students were immersed in dialog and action of a shared sustainable culture of peace, economic justice, and environmental stewardship from 9/11-9/21!

Oklahoma Centennial High School observed the shift from “I” to “WE” with curricular connections. “It was challenging and rewarding to collaborate with core teachers and administrators. My students created peace key chains, because they are the key to change, a “new green” cleaning product, and are currently finalizing their service-learning project reflection on how to make a real difference and impact the world in which they live” said Career and Technology instructor, Carrie Renfro.
Kindergarteners at Mercy School enjoyed a diversity story-teller and discussed what they learned. “We’re all different, just like the crayons in the story, and we’re all important!” exclaimed five year old Mohamed.
At Piedmont Middle School and Western Oaks Elementary School, students learned about the impact of choosing a path of kindness over bullying. Piedmont Art teacher Frances Williams explained, “From their discussion, it was obvious that this unit had a great impact on our students!” “This conversation is making an important difference; it will continue,” stated Western Oaks art teacher Staci Craven.
Click here to see the slide show of Oklahoma’s peace activities.

From K-12th grade, Casady students pledged their commitment to SEE PEACE in acts of kindness, service, and non-violence.Older students also viewed the video by Jeremy Gilley, PEACE ONE DAY before pinwheel making. Carmen Clay, Service-Learning Director, stated, “Students realized that this day is working because it is saving lives and creating a desire for intentionally kinder communities and a self-patrolling non-violent way of life.” Anne Josette Hill, Casady freshman, commented, “I personally befriended a former rival over a pile of half finished pinwheels.”  Primary Division Director, Mrs. Jane Sharp stated, “Dr. Montessori said, ” “Averting war is the work of politicians; establishing peace is the work of education.” ” Every day our teachers are involved with this important work of peace by showing grace and courtesy to each other and to the children so that they may then show peace to others. We will be celebrating this important date every year with our youngest students here at Casady.”

Who Will You Make Peace With?

Peace Day 21 September 2013
Following the incredible success of the Global Truce 2012 campaign, Peace One Day has launched a new theme for 2013: Who Will You Make Peace With?

Peace starts with individual action, and your actions inspire others to do the same. Peace Day 21 September 2013 is a Saturday; it really is an opportunity for all of us to become engaged in the peace process with our families, friends and communities.

By working together and making peace with each other we can improve the quality of our lives. Peace Day is not just about a reduction of violence in areas of conflict, it's also about reducing violence in our homes, communities and schools.

So who will you make peace with? Who will you bring together on Peace Day 21st of September 2013?

Here's what you can do:
1. Raise awareness of Peace Day
2. Take action on Saturday, 21 September 2013
For ideas and resources to help raise awareness of Peace Day and getting involved in the campaign visit the Take Action page.
TAKE ACTION

100 Days until International Day of Peace: A note from PEACE ONE DAY

Dear Carmen,

We only have 100 days before Peace Day 21 September. Greater awareness of Peace Day means more people behaving in a peaceful manner. The more people planning and preparing for Peace Day, the greater the behavioural change, reducing violence in the home and further afield. So let’s use these last 100 days to involve as many people as we can. Through our combined efforts we can reach hundreds of millions of people to create a moment of global unity.

Here are a couple of examples of how people are planning to mark Peace Day:

  • How can children inspire their peers through peace poems? Peace One Day Education supporters Ocado are about to launch an inspirational initiative across the UK. More information to follow soon.

Momentum is building, so please share your ideas, provide links, help inspire the world!

The Peace One Day Coalitions keep going from strength to strength. We’ve got 100 days to make them even stronger. Bigger coalitions will mean more people behaving peacefully on Peace Day.

In the past 100 days I have travelled to four continents; everywhere I go, I’m inspired by the work I see in making Peace Day 2013 a fantastic success. In these final 100 days before Peace Day, let’s inspire the world to make this by far the biggest coming together in the name of peace ever seen. We can all ask, “Who Will You Make Peace With on 21 September?”

Thank you for your continued support.

In peace

Who will you make peace with in 2013?

Who will you make peace with? It's a powerful question. And we have a powerful vision: With your help, we want to reach 600 million people with the message of Peace Day in 2013, and inspire a mass movement towards peace and reconciliation. Peace Day, 21 September, is now only six months away.

Peace starts with individuals coming together. Stories of reconciliation and unity connect, inspire and empower us as individuals and communities to work together. If we can make peace with those around us, this message will impact upon the lives of millions worldwide.

Peace One Day Celebration 2013
The Peace Palace in The Hague has been a worldwide beacon of Peace and Justice for 100 years. Peace One Day has been asked to bring its 2013 Peace Day celebration to the Peace Palace to mark its centenary – a celebration of our collective efforts to make peace happen.  More info soon.

Schools’ Network update
The Schools’ Network already has 788 schools throughout 100 countries! Please continue to share the online membership form: http://peaceoneday.org/schools-network-membership-form/.

On 19 March, I joined young people from School Number 164 in Zelenogorsk, Siberia, as part of the PeaceTalks project. Zelenogorsk is a ‘closed town’ requiring visitors to undergo security vetting and an invitation to enter, because it is the site of a Soviet-era uranium enrichment plant. Using Skype, we connected to Brentwood County High School in the UK to share stories and ideas around the theme of ‘Who Will You Make Peace With?

News from the other Peace One Day Coalitions:

Faith Coalition:  Launched with lead partner Religions for Peace International, this coalition will see the largest mobilization of the world's religious and spiritual communities towards peace and reconciliation.

NGO Coalition: Lead partner Interpeace has just announced the official inauguration of a new Peace House, a neutral space for local conflict resolution in the previously violence-afflicted district of Ermera, Timor-Leste. The first foundation stone of this Peace House was laid in a special ceremony on Peace Day 2012. The NGO Coalition has 462 members in 133 countries.

‘Reducing Domestic Violence’ Coalition: On International Women’s Day, Baroness Scotland of EDV Global Foundation, lead partner of the coalition, explained how issues of domestic violence are increasingly being recognised and addressed. We continue to spread the word and generate dialogue on these pressing issues which affect us all. This coalition has 210 members in 90 countries.

Student Coalition:  Lead partner, The European Students’ Union (ESU), recently provided the platform for an historic protocol of cooperation between Armenian and Turkish student groups. The Student Coalition currently has 323 member organizations in 92 countries.

Corporate Coalition: We are delighted to announce Unilever, Skype, Lotus F1 Team, Innocent Drinks and Ocado as founding members. Discussions with other major corporations are well underway so watch this space for further updates on the world’s leading businesses coming together to institutionalize Peace Day.

So much is happening around the powerful question: Who Will You Make Peace With? To see how you can become involved, have a look at some of Peace One Day's initiatives – One Day One Goal, One Day One Dance and Set for Peace.

Thank you again for your continued support. In peace, Jeremy Gilley Founder of Peace One Day
